The Lifestyle of the Lakes of Calgary
Do you want to live in a lake community in Calgary? Living in a lake community is rewarding and fun! Calgary has a number of lake communities whereby a man-made lake is the centre of all the action and fun in the community. Lake Bonavista was the first lake community in Calgary as construction started in 1967. In fact, it was the first lake community in Canada to be built around a man-made lake. Now Calgary has many areas that have a man-made lake within the community. Often the portion of the earth excavated from the man-made lake is then used to build other features within the community common areas, such as waterfalls, toboggan hills, or used to bring the land elevation up in other future communities that are located near the river - such as Riverstone in Cranston.
If you're looking for a community that is great for the whole family, or a place where you can get out and enjoy the water and the lakefront of the community lake, then check out the real estate on the market in one of Calgary's amazing lake communities.
Activities that are available at most lake communities are as follows (not an exclusive list!): swimming, beaching, BBQ, picnic, tennis, fishing, watersports, basketball, splashpark, greenspace, frisbee, football, soccer, bandstand, walking trails, food vendors, skating, skiing, ice fishing, tobaganning, snowshoeing. The community association has a home owner's association fee for residents that is typically based on the type of home you own in the community. These HOA fees tend to be, at most, $500 per year and are generally lower for condo an townhome owners. The fees collected go to maintain the community with beautification programs and the lake area.
As a resident at one time of a lake community of Calgary, I know what value the lake communities have, especially for families. With the hustle and bustle of today's world for working moms and dads, the lake communities provide an easy and quick escape on evenings and weekends. A quick walk or drive to the beach house access point then provides a load of fun for your kids and / or enjoyment for you to just get away from it all and be minutes from your home. Bring your portable charcoal BBQ and roast some hot dogs for your family friends or just head down with your fishing rod and fish for some good size rainbows that are stocked in some of the lakes. In the winter, bring your skates and tie them on close to the gas fire pit that some communities have placed around the skating area to keep warm until you are ready to hit the ice!
I am a big proponent of lake life living in Calgary. I have clients, friends, and family who also see the value in the urban lake community life and whether it is Auburn Bay, Arbour Lake, Chaparral, Elbow Valley, Harmony, Heritage Pointe, Lake Bonavista, Sundance, McKenzie Lake, Mahogany, or Midnapore, each community has a unique and different setup but generally it's all centred around family fun and a strong sense of community.
